Electric commutes for a career she loves

Lori has spent the last decade living and working in the Sea to Sky corridor. She loves the people she works with and serves as a manager at the Whistler Community Services Society. Founded 30 years ago, the social enterprises she manages funds programs (like the Food Bank, mental and emotional support) that respond to the community’s social and emotional wellness needs. When her family decided to make a move from Whistler to Squamish, she wanted to find a way to keep her job despite the 40-minute commute.

Since public transit is very limited between communities (there is no regularly scheduled service between Squamish and Whistler), she looked at alternatives to reduce her commuter costs and footprint. To avoid paying roughly $450 per month in maintenance and fuel costs with her existing vehicle, she switched to a Chevrolet Volt and realized immediate savings. The Volt has a gas range extender but Lori rarely needs this feature. Over time, she now calculates that charging costs her roughly a $1.50 per day, mostly charging overnight at a regular wall outlet at home to manage her commute.  Lori has become passionate about EV ownership and its potential to reduce GHG emissions in the corridor, since personal vehicle transport is Whistler’s and Squamish’s largest source of GHG emissions. Recently, she seized an opportunity and applied for a rebate from the CleanBC Go Electric EV Charger Rebate Program to install a Level 2 charger at her workplace. With this additional charging option in Whistler, her commute got even easier.
